England all out for 286, trail Australia by 85 in 3rd Test

Skipper Ben Stokes hit a gritty 83 as England were dismissed for 286 in their first innings of the must-win third Ashes Test against Australia on Friday.

Text size:

They trail by 85 runs after the hosts were all out for 371, spearheaded by Alex Carey's 106.

England resumed day three at 213-8 with Stokes not out 45 and Jofra Archer on 30.

The pair shared in a battling 106-run ninth-wicket stand before Mitchell Starc, with the new ball, bowled Stokes, whose half-century was his slowest ever in a Test.

Archer was the last wicket to fall, caught by Marnus Labuschagne off Scott Boland for 51 -- his highest Test score and a maiden half-century.

Boland ended with 3-45 while Pat Cummins took 3-69 in his first Test since July after lower back issues.

Australia lead the five-Test series 2-0 and will retain the Ashes if they win or draw, after back-to-back eight-wicket thumpings in Perth and Brisbane.
