China and Gabon Upgrade Ties to 'Shared Future' Amid Strategic Pact
China and Gabon have elevated their diplomatic relationship to a "community with a shared future for the new era," following high-level talks in Beijing. The announcement came as President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema concluded his first state visit to China since taking office, marking a deepening of strategic ties between the two nations.
China and Gabon have elevated their diplomatic relationship to a "community with a shared future for the new era," a designation that underscores the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations. The announcement was made by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema during talks held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday.
The elevation of ties comes as part of President Nguema’s five-day state visit to China, his first since assuming office in May 2025. The Gabonese leader arrived in Beijing on Tuesday, following a stop in Shanghai where he attended the ongoing ninth China International Import Expo. During his stay, Nguema also held separate meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
During the bilateral talks, President Xi Jinping emphasized the resilience of the China-Gabon relationship, describing it as having "withstood the test of a changing international landscape" while remaining "rock-solid." He noted that the two countries treat each other as equals and support one another for shared development. Xi stated that deepening these ties aligns with the common aspirations of both peoples and reflects the broader trend of unity and self-strengthening among Global South nations.
Xi expressed China’s commitment to being a "reliable friend and partner" in Gabon’s independent development. He pledged support for Gabon’s autonomy in political, economic, and diplomatic affairs, while encouraging close exchanges at all levels. This includes sharing experiences in party and state governance to help enhance Gabon’s governance capacity.
On the economic front, Xi highlighted the "economic complementarity" between the two nations and called for the alignment of their development strategies to cultivate new growth drivers. He specifically encouraged Gabon to utilize China’s zero-tariff treatment policy, which was extended in May to all 53 African countries with which China has diplomatic relations. Additionally, Xi pointed to a "green channel" policy designed to fast-track customs clearance for African agricultural products, aiming to promote industrial development, job creation, and livelihood improvement in Gabon.
President Nguema responded by affirming that strategic mutual trust has been the cornerstone of the partnership for more than half a century. He described cooperation between the two countries as "vibrant," citing significant contributions to Gabon’s economic diversification and improvements in infrastructure, energy, healthcare, education, and vocational training.
Nguema reiterated Gabon’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and congratulated the Communist Party of China on the successful holding of the fifth plenary session of its 20th Central Committee. He expressed a desire to promote party-to-party exchanges and learn from China’s governance experiences. Furthermore, he welcomed increased Chinese investment to aid Gabon’s industrialization and sustainable development.
Describing China-Africa cooperation as mutually beneficial, Nguema noted that the zero-tariff treatment meets the needs of African nations by allowing more products to enter China’s vast market, a move he termed of "historic significance" for Africa's development. He also praised China’s advocacy of multilateralism and its stance on international affairs, stating that Gabon is willing to coordinate closely with Beijing to strengthen Africa-China solidarity and safeguard the interests of Global South nations.
Following the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents covering areas such as the Global Security Initiative, zero-tariff treatment, industrial and supply chains, and Chinese language education. The leaders also issued a joint statement formalizing the building of a China-Gabon community with a shared future for the new era.
