Family-run West Sussex beach café prepares for first winter season

Salt Café in East Preston is staying open through winter for the first time, nearly 70 years after the Steel family bought the seaside kiosk.

The business began in 1957 as a small hut selling ice cream and sausages to holidaymakers. It has remained in the family through different managers and periods when it was leased to outside operators.

Imogen Steel and her mother Rachael took direct control in January and expanded the site with shelter, more seating and tables on the beach. The menu has also grown to include a wider range of breakfast and lunch dishes.

The owners say the café’s longevity reflects consistent food and service alongside gradual adaptation to changing tourism patterns. The winter opening marks the latest attempt to turn a traditionally seasonal location into a year-round destination.
